Writing Some Issues

Hi and Welcome to the A & J PEI Treasures E Jean Simpson Author Blog Post and Podcast.  I’m your host, Jean coming to you from the inspiring Province of Prince Edward Island, Canada!   Today’s podcast and blog post deals with some of the issues that are common to writers in our modern era.  It is difficult to make and find your own niche.  You need to have perseverance in the face of a diverse world of books and e-books and be able to outlast the current economic conditions.   If you want to learn more about my take on this and find out just how important that is….keep reading!

I have to warn people, in this post, I don’t talk all wine and roses.  There are a lot of benefits to being an artist/author.  I love doing what I do.  But, there is also another side to the whole process.  This is the side that not many talk about.  The reason is more to do with ego than with reality because you have to admit that it isn’t perfect and it seems to be an issue with many things nowadays.  Anything takes time.  Writing is one of those things that you may or may not make a living from, so make sure that you enjoy the work enough to give yourself enough time to find out.  It’s not an easy career to make your way through.  So, on to the meat of this thing.

The other day, I filled out a Government questionnaire on being an author/artist.  These can be somewhat enlightening and also somewhat discouraging.  You see, you realize just how little you’ve accomplished by the standards of monetary gain and just how hard you work.  You realize how far you feel you are from what you want to be.  This isn’t always a bad thing.  Once you pick yourself up and dust yourself off, you realize that you’re just starting this avenue and it is a difficult path.  You see, there are a variety of things during this time that affect your ability to be as productive as you would like.

The first and most important factor that we realistically have very little control over is the current economic condition.  You see, with COVID, there are a lot of people who are not in stable occupations or who have had some blank spaces in their resume.  There are a lot of businesses that are struggling to maintain themselves with the lockdowns and there are a lot of people working from home.  So, logically speaking, there is a lot less disposable income floating around and people have to pick and choose what they buy.  There are also a lot of people who are suddenly thrust into publishing e-books, blog posts, podcasts etc. because of the current conditions.  This is a reality.  We don’t control this reality.  Prior to COVID many people were working or doing other things and had more stable career paths.  They were too busy to do anything else.  So, since you have no real control over the economy or COVID, you need to decide if you want to continue on the artistic/author path.  If the answer is yes, then keep on your path.  Realize that you don’t control it and don’t make it a requirement for your continued happiness as an artist or author.  Sure it sucks, but you don’t control that aspect of your art.  There is always the option to find some other line that you can, but they aren’t always any easier.  But, if you are determined to continue as an author/artist, then keep on going.

If, like me, and I’m sure I’m not the only one, who has little to no budget, then find whatever means you can come up with to keep your art going.  If you cannot afford to do advertising, there are methods of advertising that are free to maintain…and though you may not make any money from it and will be busy, it will keep you working and inspired.   There are news sites that you can post pictures in if you do photography or other craft type arts. If you make craft type art, you might be able to sell some.  Sure a lot of ways don’t pay, but if you send out some good pictures, you may find that your name gets out in the mainstream.  Take one step at a time.  If you do e-books, make sure to have a press release prepared that you can send off.  Send it out for every e-book.  Find free to advertise your e-book sites.  You might or might not get any publicity, but you will get your name out.  Be realistic, this might not work and it might be a long time before it does.   It definitely won’t work if you don’t bother.  It seems much of the publishing world requires entry fees for anything that one does.  This actually makes it harder for low budget authors to fit for anything.  This also highlights some disparity in the publishing field.

So, I have hinted at it, but the world of self-publishing seems to have dramatically increased with COVID.  March 2020, there was a news article stating that Amazon was flooded with self-published books.  There are also scam plagiarized books.  I’m not even going to try to discuss this extra issue.  https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/mar/12/amazon-flooded-with-self-published-coronavirus-books.  They do note that Amazon tried to be diligent in removing the plagiarized and copy and paste type books.  These issues have made it even tougher for those who are serious about e-book publishing as it creates more on the market and disappointed buyers who lose trust in the format.  So, another thing one needs to take into account is that COVID resulted in a glut of e-books and book publishing on the market and not necessarily keeping pace with the increase in buying.  Though it also resulted in extra sales, it resulted in extra e-books and books in general.  This makes it harder to sell and be taken seriously.

Understand that if you choose to use e-books, you will not be taken as seriously as those producing print books.  Though it is more eco-friendly than print books, it is still seen as the ‘alternative’ format by some publishers and many contests.   Also, one has to take into account that there is a push to smaller homes now…and the tiny home movement.  E-books would be the most space friendly and travel friendly.  However, the printed book still seems to be the preferred method for most advertising and contests etc.  So, as with anyone who finds themselves a bit ahead of their time, you will find that you are treated as less credible than those who produce printed books.  This may or may not improve over time.  Libraries do have e-books available.  Printed books will not disappear, but it sometimes feels as though they are treating each other as competition.

I have listed just some of the issues with publishing at this time.  It remains to be seen whether time clears up these issues.  I hope with time that the above mentioned issues will be resolved and that with improvements in the situation, there will be resulting improvements with the self-publishing issues as well.  In the meantime, being aware of the issues that are part of the e-book author’s world will make it easier to understand why some of us will continue to create and wait for times to improve.  I think it is called hope, though less charitable people would have a different name for it.
