I’ve seen several articles indicating that E-books are short term thing that won’t garner much attention or be a lasting influence in the literary world. This is the gist in one form or another of these articles.
Let me tell you that if you see authorship as a get rich quick scheme, let me disabuse you of this. If you are an author/writer, then expect that you will not make a ton of money unless you become very popular. Be an author because it is important to you. Not because you want to be rich or want to be famous. Do it because it is what you want more than anything. It doesn’t matter what topic you choose, just makes sure that it is something that you want to do with every ounce of your being. Decide if you want that and you are willing to do the work. Decide if you want to see if it would potentially be something you want to do. Decide if you are willing to continue even if you aren’t a huge seller right away and have to really work at it.
First, for newbies, I would suggest not to spend a ton of money in the beginning. Start out with a test of the waters. If you think you have to start with ‘big publishers’ then do so but be aware that you are likely as not to get rejections. If that discourages you, then maybe it’s time to move on. I actually preferred starting with the new media, E-Books and went the self-publishing route. I think that e-books are a great way to test the waters. There are some free methods out there to get published from. E-books are very popular as it reduces the paper used.
From there you can do the work of publicizing. If at some point, you decide you want to do your own EPUB formatting, then find something that works for you. Even if it takes some time you will do it. Books generally aren’t going to be advertised for you in E-book format and you can’t expect people will do the work for you. You will have to do the work.
Remember as an author, everyone goes through growing pains and decide to try different options. It is normal to explore. Don’t let yourself get discouraged by perceived failure. If you are getting books out and improving your knowledge base, you can move ahead and you can always improve your style. People who follow an author get to see them grow and change and that is normal and good.
Being discouraged in the short term is normal, but staying discouraged isn’t going to help. It is always a valid choice to make a career change that works better for you, but until you’ve tried, you’ll never know. So, stay Realistically Unrealistic and know what it is that you want out of the experience. Think hard about whether authorship is for you. Guaranteed that you’ll find things not working out as fast or as well as you want…especially if you go in with stars in your eyes expecting to be a huge selling high paid writer. If you go in just wanting to be a writer and insist on working hard at it and enjoy it, you will be a success no matter what.
As the old quote goes: No man is a failure who is enjoying life. – William Feather.
You also need to consider that if you have no budget, it is harder and incredibly more challenging. Don’t let anyone tell you it is impossible. Yes, it is difficult, but if you want to try as a first time author then there are low to no budget ways to see if it is a fit for you.
